Types of excavators

There are a lot of different excavator types that you can choose from.  You need to choose the right type for the job you’ll have. Not choosing the correct one will only result in your project being pushed back or getting delayed.

We don’t want that to happen to you. That’s why here at Ken-Co Rentals, we’re going to list down all of the types of excavators to help you. This way, you’ll know exactly what you need the next time you drop by our office.

Crawler excavators

This type of excavator is also known as a compact excavator because of the facts they can be used to lift heavy rocks and soil off of the ground. It is also used in different types of heavy-duty jobs like mining.

Instead of moving with wheels, these types of excavators only run on endless tracks to make sure that their move is two-dimensional. It is also suitable for moving up and down hills because they have less risk of falling over than other equipment.

Even though many will argue that it is a slow machine to operate, you can tell by the reviews on the internet that it is reliable. It has great balance, flexibility, and stability in working on different projects.

Dragline excavators

This is more different from the first excavator that we described earlier because it has a much different process than any heavy equipment. Even though it might sound complicated at first, you’ll eventually learn how to move it carefully.

The machine uses a hoist rope system that uses a bucket to move the equipment itself. They are often large and cannot be operated remotely.

Due to their size and weight, these types of machine are often assembled on the site itself. You’ll need an experienced mechanical engineer to assemble the equipment. It is often used in big projects like fixing a road or canal drainage system.

Suction excavators

This type of excavation unit has all the power of digging, sucking dirt, and releasing water at high speed. They are also known as vacuum excavators because of the suction pipe that can remove debris from the ground. The suction can have 400 horsepower and it can release a water jet to soften it before digging.

It is often used in roadworks. It can also be used for more delicate applications like underground digging because the water can soften it without damaging the surrounding and dangering everyone.

Skid steer excavators

This type is one of the most common types of excavator that you can see. We even have it here at Ken-Co Rentals that you can use anytime you want. They have great mobility and are small enough to manoeuvre in small spaces like residential areas.

It can also be attached with buckets and booms. These types of machines are often used for residential areas and small works like digging pools, cleaning snow, and many other things.

Long reach excavators

If you need heavier duty work to be done like crushing, cutting, or shearing soil from the ground, this is the best type of excavation unit that you need to rent. It has a long arm that can extend to 100 feet horizontally.

Besides crushing and demolition, it can also be used for hard-to-reach places.  It is mainly used for different types of demolition projects. We also have them here at Ken-Co Rental because many have requested them.

Difference between an excavator and a backhoe digger

Even though they both have a lot of similarities, they have differences that you don’t notice. You shouldn’t confuse them with each other, especially when you’re on a construction site. They have different sizes, weight, and functionality.

Excavators have large builds that can weigh up to 200,000 pounds and can be as tall as 100 feet depending on the type you’ll choose. They also have attachments that can make the equipment rotate 360 degrees to cover more area.

Backhoe diggers are smaller and much more compact than excavators. They have the same appearance and might look like a tractor sometime. It can also rotate up to 200 degrees to remove debris.

Excavators are perfect for heavy-duty jobs because they have large sizes and they are more durable against harsh weather conditions. While  backhoe diggers are only perfect small to medium jobs but rest assured that we both have that kind of equipment here at Ken-Co Rentals.
